One of the more unbeatably obscure Catchphrases in existence refers to a weak shape in TheNobleGameOfGo, an "empty triangle" of three stones arranged on four vertices of a square, with no stone in the fourth location. The empty triangle can be punished by forcing it into bad shape, occupying its liberties other than the crucial "empty" point. This manoeuvre often ends in the capture of several stones.

The Japanese term for the empty triangle is "akisankaku".

The phrase "punish the empty triangle" is believed to originate with CameronMacFarland. Because of its obscurity, sinister resonance, and more than slightly absurd character it became a popular utterance among UniSFAns during the years 2001-2003, following which its currency began to wane.
